The Lonely People On The Bus: Lonliness Has A Look…..

I often think although I have been alone for nine years, I wasn’t always alone. Therefore, I am not lonely. Family and friends, and my own sense of self would not allow. Too many things to do, too many people to do the things with, and New York City, a city of places and things, so lonely is not allowed in my thought process. If I wanted to spend my days remembering, I do have so much that is wonderful to remember. A Russian proverb addresses that for me. “Longing for the past, is like chasing after the wind.” So lonely and longing are out. Observing is not out though, and when I’m on the bus, and the lighting is not exactly candlelight, “they” don’t look so good. I observe, and what I see is sadness. There’s just a look I can’t fully explain, but If you take the time, you will see them as well. The people on the bus represent realism at its most real. Why are there so many lonely people in this world? The Beatles sang about them. The people on the bus have a lost look; an untouched, unloved, lonely stare. I adore fantasy, hope, dreams, and lovely thoughts. They sustain me, the majority of the time and help the psyche. If I didn’t think I would be thought of as marginally insane, I for a moment, thought of asking all the people on the bus if they wanted to meet all the other people on the bus. We could have one big party. I decided against that idea. Maybe it’s the changing of the clocks, and being a dreary day gone dark so early that made me observe the lonely people on the bus.

Umbrella Etiquette in New York City

If you live or visit the city, a tip re umbrellas. Imagine this visual. Many people walking side by side in a row, some coming towards you, and then the ones in back of you, all carrying umbrellas of every size. ( wind umbrellas are carried by those in the know) You would prefer not having your eyes attacked by spokes. What to do? Hold your umbrella high above your head as you approach others………………..and just like that, a magical moment. A street of Mary Poppins…………………No one was hurt, or seen flying over the city.

Central Park NYC

Walking my canine Havenese grand-dog on West 95th. Street, I was taking in a beautiful fall day in the city I love. Instead of him walking on concrete and marking yet more concrete, I decided to go into the park. He was enjoying the lush greens of the park as much as I was…except for one minor issue. So much grass, so much time to mark. He literally was stopping to pee every ten seconds, and instead of gently pulling him onward, I realized, he too wanted time to smell the flowers. It was indeed, a beautiful walk in NYC.

Enchanting, Enduring, and Ever Loved Carol Channing

This past holiday weekend, the fabulous Carol Channing was visiting the Fire Island community of Cherry Grove.. “She submitted gleefully to questions and prods from Justin Vivian Bond, the transgender performer, who interviewed her for about an hour.” She spoke about her career, and even though she was on the road a great amount of time, she raised her son, Channing Lowe, who is a prizewinning political cartoonist. She said “she has a genuine and untroubled sense of joy for her work”, including 5.000 “Hello Dolly” performances. My friend Edith who is 96, was also raised by Christian Scientists parents. Maybe there is something about avoiding doctors, since Carol Channing was also raised the same way and going strong at 92. When she was 16 she was told her father was half black, and she said “I thought I had the greatest genes in show business.” I think of Carol Channing as a national treasure, and she has become one of my role models, of course, Betty White as well. When working, she remarked “To be so appreciated, is something every human being should experience.” So, on to your 100th celebrated hopefully in good health dear Carol Channing.

Summer Days Are Over

Something so zen about summer and so hectic once September arrives. Happy Fall All….

Another War? What have we learned?

My blog has never been political, nor am I. In fact, the older I become, the more apolitical I become. It is frustrating, and the feeling of helplessness comes to mind. No matter who I vote for, it seems our job is to invade other countries. Ban Ki- Moon, Secretary general of the United Nations said “the situation should be resolved in a peaceful way through dialogue.” I have taken a few quotes from Letters to the Editor in the Times today. “So Prime Minister David Cameron cannot wage war without the consent of the British people as represented by Parliament. I guess this is what a democracy looks like.” B.Deimling…”Our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan should have told us by now that dropping more bombs on a Muslim country will do nothing but perpetuate violence and increase hatred of America.” partial quote from R.Marshall. The New York Post has an article about Assad’s 11- year old son daring the United States to attack Syria in a Facebook rant. Enough lives have been lost, enough trillions have been wasted. Is it so impossible to strive for, and live in peace? World peace!. Sorry if this is a bit heavy on a holiday, but Twitter is filled with tweets hoping the United States will not make a strike against Syria. I thought you’re supposed to learn from past mistakes. Maybe I’m wrong. On a lighter note, I’m planning a move to Avatar.

For Animal Lovers and Protectors

It has come to my attention recently on Twitter, the cruelty to animals and just how prevalent it has become in our violent society. Through the efforts of Animal Rescue Crusade @ARCrusade and Shirley@parlace, and many others, voices of animals are being heard. Here are some other voices I would like to share. Michael Mountain “Kindness to animals, and respect for all life are the only meaningful foundation for a civilized world.” ..Jon Evans “To inflict cruelties on defenseless creatures, or condone such acts, is to abuse one of the cardinal tenets of a civilized society-reverence for life.” …Albert Schweitzer “Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human life.” … Mohandas Gandhi “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ” I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” “The measure of a society can be how well its people treats its animals”…………..Please do whatever you can to prevent cruelty to animals by supporting the many wonderful organizations that help the helpless….Thank you for reading..

New York Moment

Sitting on the 79th Street Crosstown bus going West, when the gentleman next to me said rather loudly “really now.” I wasn’t talking on my phone, not wearing offensive perfume, an innocent. I quickly replied “what?”…and he just as quickly said, “oh, I’m just talking to myself.” Oh well, I certainly don’t want to interrupt the two of you. He laughed and thought my remark was amusing enough to call a friend,to tell him about this little New York moment. We talked a bit, and he told me he was a Catholic priest on his way to a hospice call, adding that he gives dignity and grace when most needed. I was happy I gave him a little comic relief.

A New York Thing?

Walking on West 95th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, I came across a used tossed out huge navy blue couch on the sidewalk, surrounded by many garbage bags. A large sign placed right on the couch said SOFA..NO BEDBUGS. I swiftly walked away thinking a whole lot of trust would have to go into the decision of making that sofa your own…but in New York City, you never know…

A small world after all

Never ever gave a thought to exploring social networks. I thought foolish for me, more for my grandchildren, certainly not me. How very wrong I was. Always considered myself to be non judgmental and involved and evolved. I was brought up to give back to the community by my mother and I did, for over fifty years. We should know ourselves, and at 78, if I didn’t, who then? You shouldn’t arrive at “a certain age” without a degree of wisdom ,and the desire to inspire. Well, I must admit I was very wrong about the world of connecting and connection. In March, I started my blog mothernatureisaman.com, about observations and issues, not just involving women. We are, after all, so much alike when we think alike. It is five months later, and I have over 300 followers on twitter. Facebook, eighty-eight “friends.” Sadly, many of mine are deceased or not on computers. Discovering, and being part of the twitter world has become an integral part of my social network life, and brings me a sense of fun and joy. I have been welcomed by people of all ages and colors…from all parts of the world, and what a small world it is when connecting on an emotional level. No judging by age, color, or anything for that matter. If you’re spiritual, they will find you…vegetarians, here we are….believers and people of faith of course, non believers as well….singles, single moms, single dads, all business’s and professions represented,….animal lovers galore…LGBT community, straight community,….musicians of all genre’s,…comedians,…artists….the entire creative community, and the non creative groups. I’m sure I may have left out a few, and I apologize, so please feel free to weigh in, reply and add-on. What I didn’t find and looked for, were people in my age group…but that’s ok, because each and every one of you has given me a most satisfying and glorious experience. To inspire has been a goal and I have received validation enough to feel the joy of accomplishment. The world can be such a wonder filled peaceful place. Making a difference might be possible. I thank you all most sincerely.
