We met at a writing workshop over 40 years ago. I drove in from New Jersey and Barbara lived in NYC. Our routine was to always go out for dinner to discuss the amusing happenings we experienced at the workshop.
I had an idea for a book I was working on. A recently separated woman discovers her sensuality and realizes that the few men she went out with were all different signs of the Zodiac. Very close to the traits of each sign. She decides to go through The Circle of Animals and see if the men she met all matched their signs.
One dinner night with Barbara, I told her my idea and why I was dropping it. The character wasn’t anything like me or what I would do, and I didn’t really admire or like her for the concept. I was creating someone I didn’t want to write about. Amusing, but something I would never embark on. Barbara immediately said “let’s do it together. I’ll take 6 and you take 6 and we can write it together. Sorry for the cliché, but the rest is history.
My husband Barry was very supportive and encouraged me to finish the book with Barbara. He found it difficult to understand why the process was taking so long. “Have Barbara come out to New Jersey for weekends and finish the book.” I read him chapters, and of course there were many sub plots. We had no work schedule and Barbara also had a full-time job. Whatever the reasons, the book was put on hold.
When Nancy Reagan had an astrologer helping her, and Kate had the natural line of creams idea, Barry again would say, “Why not get your book out? It’s so timely.”
……..and still Circle was in the waiting mode.
The week before Barry died, we were in Connecticut and Elizabeth Brundage was there. I knew her the day she was born. She is now a well-known author and her writing is brilliant and wonderful. She told me at a later date that Barry mentioned to her that weekend, about my book and to push me to finish it or something like that. He died a few days later, suddenly and I was in a state of grief and shock. Circle again on the back burner.
Elizabeth wrote a delightful blurb for the book and I will be forever grateful for her generosity with her words.
When I told Barbara about Barry, she was also shocked and asked “what can I do?” I said quickly that Barry wanted us to finish the book.
Many months later after we had worked out a schedule, a box was at my front door with the first draft and a simple card….. For Barry.
I had moved from New Jersey. Barbara found a great apartment in the same building she lived in. I’m on the 4th floor and she’s on the 10th, so the process of finishing Circle was made easier. A long and sometimes grueling time. There were arguments that were handled with care. Circle for me was a labor of love. I knew Barry wanted it published as much as I did. So we self published and it came out on Amazon last week. So exciting to see it in print. Love the characters and the cover. I hope anyone who reads our words enjoys a fun read.
I would like to give a shout out to Vicki Landis, our Editor and Cover Designer, and Gregg Brickman who did the book formatting. For any writers out there wanting to self publish, I highly recommend both. They were professional and very patient. Thank you both.

Friendship Garden Thriving
I wonder how many can relate to my experiences. I wrote a post called Friendship Garden many years ago. It was basically about letting go of some toxic plants to make room for new and nourishing flowers. The same way we do physical cleaning, we also need to do emotional housecleaning. When my husband died over 13 years ago, I let go of many people. Not in an aggressive way, because it’s not my style to be confrontational. I like a mellow zen type existence. I do have expectations. I treat others with respect and kindness and like that in return, without judgements. I like to say “I let go of people” rather than “getting rid of.” It sounds softer, but the results are the same. You don’t have to be with negative people, you don’t have to be with people who definitely “don’t get you.” You have choices and the more empowered you are, the more choices you have. Just because you know someone for ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or over fifty years is not the reason they are in your life, or rather, they have to stay in your life. Friends are in your life at different times for different reasons. It’s not a given you have to keep them. I was fortunate that it was my decision to let go.
Something wonderful happened to me. For ever friend I let go of, there were new and nourishing friends that were in my life by choice, not because of the amount of time they were there before. I have a Friendship Garden that is beautiful and colorful and so grateful for every new flower, and for all my forever friends.

I once wished on a star, and said if I had a choice of meeting a great guy or seeing my book published…..it would be the book that my co-author Barbara and I finally finished after over 40 years. I will post about that process at another time. It would of course be the book, because that would never be taken from me.
So today the editor/artist sent us the cover. Front and back. Victoria Landis is a writer, editor and book cover designer. Thank you for your talents. I’m so excited, I actually showed it to my husbands picture. Hey, I talk to him everyday and do Buddhist prayers to him for almost 14 years, so of course I would show him the finished book, that he wanted to be published from the day…

On the back cover is a blurb from Elizabeth Brundage. Her latest book is All Things Cease to Appear. I have known and loved her since she was a baby. What she did was beyond wonderful. Interesting that a week before Barry died, we were together in Connecticut and he asked Elizabeth to help get this book published. We ended up self publishing and soon we will read the proof, and then it will be on Amazon. Kindle and Paperback. Thank you to Elizabeth for her wonderful words that I greatly appreciate.

Breathing
I am not a therapist, doctor, nutritionist, or trained to speak on many of the subjects I speak on. To say it all works for me, might be pretentious, and I don’t mean to be……but, it all works for me, and just passing on some common sense and natural remedy’s. I do have some validation, because I have several friends who have therapists and tell me after I give a bit of common sense, that therapists told them the same words. I love when they call me their guru. I’m certainly old enough to be one and wisdom should arrive at the same time older age arrives. I do have a 24/7 therapist, and that’s me. I would never put down therapy for those who benefit by its teachings. It just would never work for me, because I know myself better than anyone and not interested in paying someone to get to know me. I realized so many years ago that I must solve my own problems and control my overly sensitive emotions. A devout romantic, animal lover, and idealist. Realism creeps in, but I do prefer denial in a positive way,and magical thinking. Especially in this political atmosphere we’re all living with. Everything I believe in is in question and I can only deal with these issues by compartmentalized thoughts. It works for me along with very little concentrated sugar and over eating carbs. I realized I do eat for pleasure, but mostly to nourish. We must nourish ourselves…emotionally, physically, and every possible way you can. No matter how many loves surround us, we are alone mostly in our thoughts and our caring for ourselves. The point of this post is to suggest to all reading it that you consider correct breathing one of your most important exercises. Not my opinion, but Dr. Andrew Weil. You can google him for his exercise. It’s so easy to master and should be done several times a day along with Yoga abdominal breathing. Proof of the importance? I knew someone who had serious high blood pressure, She would go to the hospital often because it would peak and cause her problems. I taught her the Weil method and she told me her doctor said it was a miracle. She lowered her pressure by doing the correct breathing a few times a day.
All I’m suggesting is to google the importance of correct breathing, and how it helps all parts of your body.

2018
I wanted to start the New Year with a positive post. The end of January, I am hoping to do a post about my book being self published with my co-author. Started over 40 years ago, we finally decided 13 years ago to finish and finish we did. Will write about the process when I know the availability to share.

Not to be maudlin, but the holidays are quite different when you live alone. I never allow myself to feel lonely, because I am fortunate to be surrounded with loving and caring family and friends. But, it is just not the same and it never will be without my husband. I have learned to practice mindfulness every single day, not to allow the voids and sadness to invade, and take over my gratitude. We can control our thoughts since we put them in there and we can take them out… Strength meeting vulnerability and sensitivity in a head on collision….and strength must triumph!!
I often think what it would be like to be in love again.
Hope the New Year brings everyone reading this Good Health and Life’s Joys!! and don’t forget that eating healthy is a choice. A good one. My New Years resolution? Not to have one.
Leaving 2017
Another year, and certainly grateful for more than I’m sad about. Your emotional plus lists can come in handy when necessary. Just think of all that you have and the voids seem a little less painful. We start a new year with many hopes, dreams and those resolutions that are usually kept for about ten days, if that. As you all know, I always recommend eating healthy, and keeping in mind that living in the moment works when your moments are in good health. The dreams and hopes seem to go from one year to the other. The control you have over your thoughts and what you eat can be controlled by you. Christmas Eve I was at a warm and wonderful party. All ages and all just wanting to have fun. I met a young woman in her 20’s and very fulfilling to have her write down some of my suggestions. One was to practice breathing exercises, a most important exercise for health. Hatha Yoga, a gentle form of yoga focusing on stretching and breathing. Yoga laughter sounds weird, but your body and mind are not aware that yoga laughter is a bit forced, but a laugh is a laugh. What you do when you’re young can affect the quality of your life as you age. Balance is so important and flexibility. Running and Ashtanga Yoga may work for some, but the gentle form of Hatha Yoga and walking at a fast pace 20 minutes a day may work as well. Many of my friends who used to run have had knee and hip replacements. My grandmother lived to be 99 and walked from her kitchen to the bedroom. I once read that lifestyle has more to do with your quality of life than your genes. Stress is something we all have, and I’m not talking about the extremes or tragedy. the usual normal day stress we all deal with. It is how we deal with disappointments, heartbreak,and of course realism that defines us. Fantasy and dreams should always be a part of our lives. Realistically I know I will probably never meet another great romantic love, and it’s ok. I was one of the lucky ones having had a man who loved and adored me. I don’t take that lightly ,and I know his energy is with me everyday. I’m not about to be committed to a “happy place,” but I talk to Barry everyday. Part of my Buddhist practice is a prayer to someone who has died that you loved. I feel his energy and know he “knows”, because I’m Awake.
2018…….the book my co-author and I finally finished and publishing, will actually happen in February. It’s genre is Women’s Humor Fiction, not literary, but edited, and we think a good read. because the characters are likeable and relatable. Hope some of you read and enjoy.
I find the older I become and certainly grateful for the years, the less I put up with people I don’t get and they don’t get me. It just fine because I have enough of the “wonderful others.” I love nourishing people from the same planet I’m from……and my emotional tools that really work. “If you don’t care, I care less.” It sounds harsh, but if said with a smile and not in anger, it works. No room for negative thoughts or people. Selective memory and denial are my favorites……and my role models, in their 90’s… I wish all reading this the most wonderful New Year ahead. A healthy one with laughter and joys galore…..and of course an abundance of love, and some dark chocolate everyday.
